On December 5, 2022, there was a year-end meeting for the 2022 graduates of the Samsung Scholarship Association in Gangnam, Seoul. I made a welcoming speech at the request of the graduate representative for Welcome Speech. Many scholarship students in Korea and several scholarship students from overseas, including Hong Kong and the United States, attended to encourage each other and share information. Hello, graduates of Samsung Scholarship Association.
What should I say for 15 minutes in my precious time today to help you the most? I hope my story today will be of any help to scholarship students.
Are any scholarship students still smoking? When I looked back on my life, one of the most regrettable behaviors was that I ignored my mother's words and smoked. I hope there will be at least one scholarship student who quit smoking after listening to my story today. I hope you don't regret it too late after feeling health problems with your health.
Have any of you experienced the 'feeling like you're really going to die'? "Please save me once. Has anyone ever prayed earnestly for "please save me"? In my case, when I was on the verge of death, I felt the "silence that exists alone in the whole universe." And as my consciousness returned, I felt really grateful in peace. There's a saying, "Be thankful for everything." After experiencing a dying moment, you know what it means to be grateful for everything.
Everyone, which is more important, knowledge or enlightenment? I think it is important to gain and utilize knowledge in the first half of life to create results, and in the second half of life, it is important to gain enlightenment and live comfortably.
What is enlightenment? Realization is to see exactly what's going on and to fully accept what's going on the situation. How can I achieve enlightenment? There are many ways, but most people can get enlightenment when they practice because they are desperate to know what life is by feeling and experiencing numerous emotions such as health and pain, success and failure, joy and sadness.
Everyone, think about how many of the following sentences or words you've experienced.
My eyes go black. My heart sinks. I can't breathe. My hair stands up. I am astonished. I'm sweating all over. My heart is broken. Tears streamed down, awake all night. flustered, embarrassed, despondent, sad, long wait, belated regret, mournful eyes, fear of death, a heart that is not afraid to die, desperate prayer, a desperate voice, an empty voice, a dying breath, a moment of silence, obsession, stupidity.
I'm jumping with joy. I feel like I'm going to fly. Amazing. Thank you so much. Thrilling, palpitations, fluttering, affection, peace, pleasure, boldness, happiness, love, appreciation. Have you ever felt some of these with your whole body?
In my case, I had 2 experiences of drowning, 3 experiences of being hit by a car, 1 experience of being choked to death in Indonesia, 2 months of sleep due to anxiety, 2 experiences of being threatened by a bully, and a high school senior's sudden death.
These are some of the emotions that I've experienced and felt vividly throughout my life for nearly 60 years. The more I think about it, the more I am grateful that I can live healthy with the miraculous grace of heaven. Vice President Kim Yong-nyeon is the person in front of you who has the present appearance, the present mind, and the present spirit created through these experiences.
What have you experienced so far? I think each of you has had a variety of experiences, but I hope you will have as few hard experiences as possible among all the experiences I have. One historian said that he was lucky if there was no war in his life, and I think I've experienced a lot.
Like this, life is a time travel to experience life, death, joy, and sorrow. Perhaps many people's wishes are to experience joy and pleasure often for a long time, and sadness and anger very occasionally. But fun and happy times feel short for people, and sad and hard times feel long. If you want to live your life feeling like you live a long life, you can live a hard life. This is really the irony of life.
The lives of most people born on Earth don't just go their way. Russian poet Pushkin consoled those suffering from difficulties, saying, "Don't be sad or angry even if life deceives you."
So how should we live our lives? We should experience the various feelings of life with our whole body, but not be deeply immersed or obsessed with the temporary feelings that come to us and disappear, but live by using various emotions as the driving force for us to grow into wise people.
One philosopher said that when he sees a baby, he becomes compassionate. Because he feels so bad that he can see the baby's life, death, joy, and sorrow vividly in his eyes.
Grandparents who are old don't look at their pictures very well. The reason is, when he looks at the picture, he sees with his eyes that his friends and acquaintances in the picture died first.
In general, people think about the time left in their lives when their parents die. How many lives do I have left? How many years of health life do I have left? How am I going to die? The chairman of a company died at the age of 90, but 11 of them lived as unconscious vegetarians in the hospital. What's the use of 11 years of living as a vegetative person without consciousness?
How long will you be satisfied with your life? What is one of the most empty and absurd things in the world? What I found out while watching the last of the elders is that all of his acquaintances are dead and he is alive alone. Emptiness. Ridiculous. It is said to be the feeling that the elderly feel at the end of their lives.
Ten years ago, Prime Minister Lee Hyun-jae of Korea told executives when he left the Hoam Foundation. "As I live, time goes by very quickly, and life is like a dream. And in order to spend time well, who and what do you spend your time with? It's important to do it." I felt dim at the time, but now I think I know what it means a little more.
How many things in your life do you have your own way? 100%? 50%? 25%? Everyone will think differently. In life, we can make choices, but we can't choose the results. I think we should try to set goals and do our best for the time given to us, but to enjoy the process without obsessing over the results.
Describe the history and key achievements of the Samsung Scholarship
The Samsung Scholarship Association was established in 2002 to discover and foster world-class talent. For 20 years from its establishment in 2002 to the end of the project in 2021, 900 scholarship students were selected using about 200 billion won in scholarship projects, and systematic training programs such as Pre academy before studying abroad, annual academic camps, and graduate meetings were operated.
So far, 750 graduates, including 250 domestic and foreign university professors and 500 domestic and foreign companies, are working as major talents in various fields, and contribute to academic development such as publishing more than 3,000 SCI journal papers.
When I turned 38 in 2002, I joined the Samsung Lee Kun-hee Scholarship Foundation after being offered a job, and I devoted myself to the success of the scholarship project as a team leader and vice president until the end of 2020. And I have been running the Samsung Scholarship Association in charge for the past 20 years, and I have always tried to act with the results in 20 years.
From the scholarship selection process, I planned and operated a Pre academy before studying abroad, an academic camp while studying abroad, and a meeting of graduates after studying abroad to help scholarship students overcome the difficulties of studying abroad, cooperate and interact with each other over time. And in the past 20 years, I have sent 520 newsletters to scholarship students.
I hope that from now on, many social leaders, such as domestic and foreign university professors, national institutions, corporate researchers, and venture entrepreneurs, will share and cooperate with each other to become the leading talent in Korea.
Since the beginning of this year, I've been asked to play a role in helping scholarship students communicate well, and I've been thinking about how I can help you. I will serve as a conduit for scholarship students to interact and cooperate with each other from 2023. I will review the role of a helper who connects the needs of scholarship students, and the role of a notification that announces major news of scholarship students.
And I thought about it because there was a request to write like a newsletter for scholarship students. Have I lived my life with enough experience to write? Do I know the exact meaning of the vocabulary used by people in the world? Do I have enough life experience to write?
When I think about it in the direction that I write about wisdom and enlightenment in life and provide it to you, I have to experience people's experiences with my whole body to write about enlightenment, and I have concluded that I am somewhat ready now.
From January 2023, I will provide the motif of communication between scholarship students through writing every day. I will provide wisdom about life such as education for children, parent education, and enlightenment that I have been studying recently through Blogs and Facebook.

Everyone is born with a unique talent. In particular, Samsung scholarship students were given excellent academic talent by heaven. I hope that this talent will be used for the family at least and for the country and the world at most.
On November 15, 2022, 8 billion people were living on Earth. Born in Korea out of 8 billion, passed the top 900 out of 10,000 scholarship applicants, and lived to this day, so our relationship is very precious.
It's a wonderful relationship that we have out of eight billion people. I hope that each other will develop into a precious relationship by encouraging each other.
In my opinion, it is very important who you will be associated with and accompany in your life. If we would be really happy to have someone next to our who laughs at good things and cries together at unhappy things. And it would be nice to have a companion who can talk openly and encourage each other in our lives with someone for the rest of our lives.
Human relationships are not fixed, they keep changing. If my friend made a big success, but I failed, if I'm very healthy and my friend has a major illness, if a friend's child gets into a good university and my child doesn't, in the future, there will be situations where a friend gets away from me or I get away from a friend for a variety of reasons.
Do you know Professor Ma Kwang-soo of Yonsei University who wrote "I like sexy girls"? He is known to have publicly talked about human sex and been shunned by his family and friends and committed suicide alone. Professor Ma Kwang-soo made headlines by leaving a suicide note before his death, saying, "An acquaintance who finds his dead body first should hold a funeral and have the remaining assets."
Everyone, I hope our relationship will develop into a relationship that will help each other no matter what happens. I hope that through the graduation meeting, we will develop into a relationship that trusts and cooperates with each other, encourages and respects each other.
Finally, I hope that in the first half of your life, which is full of vitality in life, you can live passionately toward your goal and live freely like a bird when the second half of your life ends. I wish you all the best this year and good luck next year. Thank you.
